Toulouse Olympique have hosted three-time defending champions St Helens for the 6th day of the Super League.
The Saints do not control the kick-off. TO’s first offense and first try: Matty Russell cornered on a school attack. Chris Hankinson made the score 6 – 0. The Saints responded to Konrad Hurrell’s 50 yards out. A few held later, Makinson scored in the corner. The transformation is lacking, the Olympians are ahead.
Fatigue is felt on the TO side. The English score by Josh Simm on the other wing, 6-8. Another Gigot special kick-off. The TO recovers. 5 held and the level of this same Gigot is recovered by Dom Peyroux for the second Toulouse test.
The opportunities are rather Toulouse, in vain. It is the Saints who find the solution just before the break. A nice offensive on the left side, Makinson finds Jack Welsby inside. It’s transformed and St Helens takes the lead at the break, 12-14.
2 minutes from the end, Toulouse made the difference in the game
The defense on the TO line is solid but finding the 20 meters of the Saints is more complicated. It takes a nice kick from Lucas Albert and a nice shot to put the Saints player in touch and get the ball back. Albert will give Hankinson the decisive pass a few held later to close the gap. 18-20.
Toulouse is pushing hard. Tony Gigot launches the special triple jump for Paul Marcon who scores in the corner. The TO passes in front 2 minutes from the end. The Saints fall along the touchline but Eloi Pélissier saves the homeland.
By beating Ernest-Wallon early in the evening against the defending winner of the competition, St Helens, by a score of 22-20, Toulouse Olympique signs a high-flying performance. Also recording, and most importantly, his first win of the season on behalf of the sixth day.
