Viktor Orban visits Paris, opposes any military aid to Kyiv

French President Emmanuel Macron received Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the Élysée Palace this Wednesday evening.

French President Emmanuel Macron received Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the Élysée Palace this Wednesday evening. He came to France to discuss the European Union and international security issues.

This Wednesday, March 5, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was received at the Élysée Palace for a « working dinner » with Emmanuel Macron, ahead of the extraordinary European Council meeting tomorrow, Thursday, March 6.

This meeting comes as Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán, who is close to both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, threatens to block the European summit in order to prevent the EU from increasing its financial and military support for Volodymyr Zelensky. « Some want war and others want peace. This is the challenge we face, » he told reporters in Budapest on Tuesday, deploring the attitude of his « European allies » and the « transatlantic divide. »

Opposed to any military aid to Kyiv, he continues to advocate, alongside his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico, for a ceasefire and peace talks and has toughened his stance against Kyiv since Donald Trump’s inauguration.

As a reminder, Viktor Orbán is the only European leader to have defended Donald Trump, following the attempted humiliation of Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

The US president ordered a « pause » in military aid to his country on Monday, after criticizing Volodymyr Zelensky, who refuses any truce without security guarantees for his country, for being disrespectful and lacking in gratitude.

The European Commission responded by unveiling a plan to provide « immediate » aid to Ukraine and « rearm Europe, » but the unity of the 27 members is fragile. In addition to Budapest’s opposition, leaders are divided over sending troops to Ukraine to ensure a possible future truce, a solution that is nevertheless at the heart of the « security guarantees » demanded by Kyiv.
