As every year after the holidays, Parisians and Ile-de-France residents can drop off their Christmas trees to recycle them as shredded material in the form of mulch.
How to proceed?
In order to avoid the wild deposit of your Christmas tree in the capital, the City of Paris organized, between December 26 and January 20, the setting up of collection points. In total, 174 points for the 2021/2022 campaign.
To do this, you bring your tree there, with or without roots, without decorations, without paint or flock. Metal feet or supports as well as plastic bags are not accepted.
This operation takes place from December 26, 2021 to January 20, 2022. You can find the list of collection points at paris.fr/recyclonsnossapins.
To raise awareness among residents, the city of Paris has relayed information beyond the municipal display, by associating, as in previous years, the caretakers of social landlords and the condominium managers, asking them to affix the posters of the operation « Give a second life to your tree ».
What becomes of these trees?
To preserve the ecology, the trees are crushed on site. This shredded mulch is used to protect plantations in green spaces. Available at the foot of flower beds or on trails, it reduces the appearance of weeds because of its germinating properties and reduces water evaporation, while developing underground micro-organisms. Because of its acidity, it cannot be used in compost, but it can act as a natural weedkiller.
Figures from previous years
For the 2020/2021 campaign, the collection of trees made it possible to harvest 12,141 trees from 170 collection points and transform them into nearly 2,400 m3 of shredded material.
For previous years, the figures are as follows:
2019/2020: 1,150,250 trees out of 195 points
2018/2019: 97,300 trees out of 174 points
2017/2018: 85,209 trees out of 164 points
Each year, there is an increase in the number of trees deposited in the harvesting points. This proves that Parisians are more eco-responsible and that they respect ecology.
And after January 20?
For latecomers, there is a possibility to get rid of their tree after January 20. You can throw it away with your household garbage in the building’s green lidded bin. If it exceeds 2m50, it must be cut in 2.
Following the example of the capital, the metropolises and provincial towns offer, for ecological reasons, fir tree recycling operations.
So, to be eco-responsible, let’s drop off our trees at collection points, a gesture for nature!
