WORLD DAY OF CLEANING THE PLANET

Preserve and restore terrestrial ecosystems, halt and reverse the process of soil degradation and halt the loss of biodiversity.

World Cleanup Day is September 19 this year.

The WORLD CLEANUP DAY citizen movement was born in Estonia in 2008. It aims to unite the whole of society around a common project. Its slogan: CLEAN our planet of its litter in 1 DAY, bringing together 5% of the world’s population.

CLEAN THE GROUND

Within hours, 4% of the population of Estonia cleaned up 10,000 tonnes of garbage. Following this success, the movement called “Let’s do it” spread around the world. In 2014, there were 7 countries which gathered more than 5% of their population in 1 day (15% in Slovenia). This is how World Clean up France was born in March 2017. To date, more than 130 countries have created their teams.

The goal of World cleanUp Day

Let’s Do It Foundation (Estonia) is accredited by UNEP (United Nations Environment Program). The World Cleanup Day campaign meets the sustainable development goals for the next 15 years:

. Ensure sustainable management of water resources,
. Establish sustainable consumption and production patterns,
. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development,
. Preserve and restore terrestrial ecosystems, halt and reverse the process of soil degradation and end the loss of biodiversity

WHAT ABOUT MEGOTS?

Last year, 840 tonnes of waste were collected in France, including 15 million cigarette butts. The theme for 2020 is to raise public awareness of the environmental cause and the proliferation of litter. Far from a simple cleaning, the event aims to raise awareness.

In Paris, residents, associations and residents are mobilizing at the invitation of the town hall to intervene in several places (24 collection points in the districts). The municipality provides gloves and bags to the participants and takes care of the waste collection. Great novelty this year, some Franprix will collect cigarette butts.

To participate, it is possible to create a group near your home.

REDUCE THE DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

At the same time, the first edition of Cyber World CleanUp Day (CyberWCUD) is an initiative led by World CleanUp Day -France and the Responsible Digital Institute (INR) to organize a digital cleaning of data as part of the World CleanUp Day. our planet.

By cleaning its data, digital equipment (computers, tablets, smartphones), the organization’s servers (business, communities, etc.) and / or the Cloud are de-cluttered, thus reducing the digital footprint.

By reducing the amount of data stored in the cloud, we help avoid increasing the number of servers already deployed.

New habits to take

A real environmental scourge, incivism is one of the main reasons for urban pollution. Plastic bottles, packaging and cigarette butts thrown around are the main culprits, not to mention bulky items.

In order to fight against this drift and protect biodiversity, associations and organizations are looking for solutions and encourage people to produce, consume and recycle better instead of throwing it away. These habits must be part of everyday life.

Urban areas are not the only places where pollution is developing, we find 80% of waste in the ocean floor including plastic bottles that take hundreds of years to degrade.
