The British House of Lords adopted Monday an amendment with the government bill on Brexit giving to the Parliament the power to prevent the government from leaving the European Union in the absence of agreement with Brussels.
The Lords give the authorization to the government to say not yet once to Europe. The adopted proposal must return in May in front of the deputies.
The proposal was adopted by 335 votes against 244. At the conclusion of its examination by the Lords, the text must return in the next weeks in front of the deputies, who had voted it in January and who could thus remove or modify this amendment embarrassing for the executive.
The amendment adopted Monday gives to the members of Parliament the possibility “of suggesting new negotiations”, to even decide on a maintenance in the EU, explained the preserving Lord Douglas Martin Hogg, one of the signatories.
This vote constitutes an umpteenth snub for the government since the beginning of the examination of the government bill by the prow, House of Lords mainly, and illustrates divisions of the party in power on Brexit.
The government of Theresa May had earlier indicated that it would certainly let the Parliament vote on the agreement of divorce. But in the event of rejection, the only remaining option was then an exit without agreement, a prospect which worries in particular the British companies.
The governmental government bill on the withdrawal of the EU must make it possible the United Kingdom to continue to function normally when it cuts the cord with the European block.
In April, the “Pars”, not elected, already had voted so that the Charter of the basic rights of the European Union is preserved in the British law, and had adopted an amendment calling into question the project of the government to leave the customs union.
It puts an end to the supremacy of the European right on the British national law and organizes the transposition of the European regulations.
