French fashion is losing one of its giants on the eve of Parisian haute couture week. Thierry Mugler, who reigned over the fashion of the 1980s and continued to delight international stars with his spectacular outfits with marked silhouettes, died on January 23 at the age of 73 of “natural death”, announced his attaché of press at AFP.

“We have the immense sadness to inform you of the death of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler”, is it also written in a press release published on the Facebook account of the creator. “That his soul rests in peace.” According to his press officer, the death of the great couturier occurred unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon. He still had plans and was due to announce new collaborations earlier this week, he said.

Thierry Mugler, who died this Sunday of natural death at the age of 73, dressed the biggest stars such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, Cardi B., Nicole Kidman, Katy Perry, David Bowie, Jerry Hall, Kim Kardashian, Sharon Stone, Cindy Crawford , Estelle Lefebure, and many others. A few hours after the announcement of his death on the night of Sunday to Monday, the tributes to the designer who reigned with Jean-Paul Gaultier and Claude Montana on the fashion of the 1980s are multiplying.

After his retirement, Thierry Mugler worked as Beyoncé’s artistic advisor, notably in the design of the costumes for her world tour “I Am…Sasha Fierce”. “Rest in peace, Thierry Mugler,” wrote the American singer on the home page of her site, in a black and white photo of a smiling Thierry Mugler.

“I will miss you, Thierry Mugler, it was a wonderful moment in our lives,” singer Diana Ross wrote on Twitter in the caption of a photo with the couturier during one of his fashion shows in Paris in 1990. The actress Kristin Davis, alias Charlotte in the series Sex and the City published in her Instagram story a quote from the designer as a tribute: “I made my own clothes because I was looking for something that did not exist. I had to try to create my own world”.

Born in Strasbourg in December 1948, Thierry Mugler arrived in Paris at the age of 20 and then created his own label “Café de Paris” in 1973, before founding the company “Thierry Mugler” a year later. Its structured and sophisticated silhouettes quickly imposed themselves.

A director at heart, he had organized spectacular public presentations of his creations. He had also embarked on the creation of perfumes, his “Angel” model experiencing great success.

It had been on display since September at an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris entitled “Thierry Mugler, Couturissime”, designed by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).
