Leonardo da Vinci, the genius of the high figure of the Italian Renaissance is presented in an exhibition at the Louvre Museum on the occasion of the five hundred years of his death. A unique opportunity to discover the remarkable career of this exceptional man icon of European painting, scientist, architect, inventor and engineer.
Leonardo da Vinci (Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci 1452-1519) was born in Florence, son of Messire Piero, born in Vinci. He spent his early years in Florence as a pupil of the sculptor Andrea del Verrochio. He then settled in Milan around 1482, during which time he painted his famous painting, the Last Supper. The artist’s striking passage from sculpture to painting is favored by the new influence brought to Florence by Flemish painting.
Infrared reflectectographies of several paintings by Leonardo da Vinci are exhibited on the same scale as the original work. The painting of the Mona Lisa remains in the permanent collection room where it is usually displayed. An infrared reflectography of the painting presented reproduces the first stages of the painter’s work. An admirable experience of virtual reality in 360 ° reveals the myth of the Mona Lisa, which allows to go to meet him. To make this experience the visitor is equipped with a virtual reality headset and headphones.
In an infinite space of light and shadow, Leonardo da Vinci knew how to give to his works by the invention of a graphic freedom, from reality to the nature of movement. He elevates painting to the level of a divine science capable of recreating the world. He leaned over his research on geometric and arithmetic relationships by placing a man in the circle and the square (the Vitruvian man). To draw for Leonardo is to reproduce forms, but it is also to express a vision passing all forms.
Leonardo da Vinci left Italy in 1516 at the invitation of King Francis I of France and it is in France in the city of Amboise that he ends his days. He painted only fifteen paintings because their execution carried the whole truth of the science of painting and went on forever.
