Tens of thousands of people marched this Saturday at the call of youth union organizations and part of the New Popular Front.
In the largest cities, these demonstrations brought together several thousand people, in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, and Strasbourg. And it was of course in Paris that the largest parade set off. It was early in the afternoon, starting from the Bastille.
Having just been appointed to Matignon, Michel Barnier has been subjected to several salvos, crossfire from the left and the right. First, La France Insoumise, which, with several organizations, has called for demonstrations in more than 130 cities on Saturday, October 7, against what they call “a coup de force” by Emmanuel Macron.
“Denial of democracy”, “the French did not vote for this”, “let him (Macron) resign”: in the marches, the slogans castigated the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister, a position that Emmanuel Macron refused to Lucie Castets, the candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP), who came out on top in the early legislative elections in July.
On the placards, the imagination of the demonstrators is on a par with their exasperation. “Macron, you put the great Barnier in, we’re going to burn everything”, “We were denied (bar)”, “No to the sinister Prime Minister”, “Hands off my vote”… As for the petitions demanding Macron’s dismissal, they are getting darker before our eyes.
On the political side, there were no communist or socialist headliners, nor environmentalists. On the other hand, the Insoumis were very well represented, notably by their leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, perched on a truck that was directly targeting the President of the Republic.
The protesters encountered in Paris also demand that the left does not return to its usual internal quarrels. Within the NFP, only the Insoumis had joined the call for the Parisian demonstration launched by the youth organizations.
Only 26,000 protesters according to the police, 160,000 according to the Insoumis marched in Paris this Saturday against the “coup de force” of the President of the Republic. Jean-Luc Mélenchon announced “a long-term battle” against the government.
Between 110,000 and 300,000 left-wing protesters marched throughout France on Saturday to shout their “anger”.
