Basta Capital: when fiction is inspired by reality

Since the end of 2019, between the protests of the yellow vests, the transport strikes, The Covid-19 and the confinements, we have been going through an unprecedented economic crisis. Social movements are multiplying, the street refutes the reforms and gets angry. In this very tense context, a state of social emergency is declared.

This is precisely what the film “Basta Capital” highlights. It is time to react. A group of activists aims to do so. The death of one of their own, (member of the Black-Blocks), at the hands of the police during a demonstration, spurred them to action. And not the least since they want to force President Emmanuel Macron to apply an anti-capitalist policy by kidnapping the main French bosses of the Cac 40 gathered at an exceptional congress.

Utopian act will you think? Not, by his messages. Although the theme fits perfectly with current events, the film is a fiction. You had to dare to think of Operation Lisa. Pierre Zellner took the gamble by imagining that the big names who make finance were taken prisoner by activists; a captivity as a means of pressure to demand the implementation of measures having for stake a political reversal knocking out the cogs of capitalism. And all this for what ? To build a sustainable society. Marx would approve.

For 11 months, therefore, the bosses will be cut off from the world and put to forced labor under the conditions in which they themselves exploit their workers. Each of them will be pilloried and pushed to its limits. Purpose ? Make them aware and become misanthropic. “The change being for now”, the activists want by their demands and fights, to make things happen. Unless, perhaps, their intentions have indirectly turned into a desire to do justice …

A visionary feature film shot as a report, distributed by Destiny Films, which sticks to the news, but which will not be without arousing controversy over the realism of the issues addressed and the credibility of the action. But after all, why not ? “I want this film to shed light on fundamental issues in an age where form reigns, and tangible proposals where communication dominates. To achieve this, the film puts on the table the necessity and the limits of recourse to violence, in the face of that shown by capitalism. It is addressed to all the disobedient, the rebellious, but also to the indignant who fear direct confrontation with the system while wishing for a global change, specifies the director Pierre Zellner. A political film therefore for a militant act, which collectively invites reflection. Will his pacifist revolutionary thought find the desired echo?
