After 10 years of absence and the film “Under the skin” with Scarlett Johansson, director Jonathan Glazer returns with a film about the Holocaust.

In this film, the director portrays the commander of the Auschwitz extermination camp, Rüdolph Höss, played by Christian Friedel, and his wife Hedwig played by Sandra Huller.

Synopsis

The Hôss couple and their children live in a house near the Auschwitz extermination camp, while ignoring the hell that the people locked up in the camp go through. While he is appointed to other functions, his wife pushes him to do everything to stay in what she considers a “paradise”. The couple’s flag is much more important in their eyes than the extermination of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and others held in the camp whose commander strives to improve performance. However, one of the children has dreams, imaged in black and white negatives, significant and disturbing.

The film reveals barracks behind the surrounding walls, the black smoke coming from the crematorium ovens and we hear the screams and the gunshots as well as the comings and goings of the trains bringing the prisoners. A few more human scenes in the last 20 minutes where we see Commander Höss vomiting at the horror of the camp he leads.

With “Zone of Interest”, Jonathan Glazer bet on modesty and delicacy on a difficult theme, the Shoah, where rigor and framing to the millimeter are at the rendezvous. Moreover, the remarkable music of the composer Mica Levi adds cachet to the staging. One downside, the contemporary images of the Auschwitz camp memorial museum.
