French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to reappoint Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister, ending several days of intense political negotiations. The head of state has asked him to form a new government “as soon as possible,” according to a statement released by the Élysée Palace on Friday evening.
Sébastien Lecornu had submitted his government’s resignation on October 6, to everyone’s surprise, just one day after presenting his new ministerial team. The move plunged the executive branch into turbulence, reigniting speculation about his political future.
Over a 48-hour period, the outgoing Prime Minister held talks with major political forces across the country. Emmanuel Macron had given him this time to conduct “final negotiations” aimed at restoring governmental stability. After reporting his conclusions to the president on Wednesday evening, Lecornu announced the end of his mission, leaving uncertainty over who would succeed him.
Several names circulated in political and media circles: former Socialist Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, former CFDT trade union leader Laurent Berger, and Pierre Moscovici, First President of the Court of Auditors. But ultimately, it was Sébastien Lecornu himself who prevailed, marking a balance between continuity and renewal.
A native of Normandy, the 39-year-old politician retains the president’s confidence despite a tense political climate and internal divisions within the executive. His reappointment appears to be a bet on stability, following an autumn marked by friction between the Élysée and Matignon.
For Emmanuel Macron, this decision ends a political episode that was brief but intense. After what one close aide called “48 hours of challenge,” France once again has an operational government—led by a Prime Minister now confirmed in his position.
