Ahead of its theatrical release on May 6, the French comedy For Pleasure (Pour le Plaisir) directed by Reem Kherici premiered in Paris on April 30 in the presence of the cast, filmmakers, media representatives and invited guests.
Inspired by a true story, the film follows the journey behind the invention of the Womanizer, the revolutionary sex toy created by German couple Brigitte and Michael Lenke, an innovation that transformed conversations around female pleasure worldwide.
With For Pleasure, Reem Kherici delivers a smart and heartfelt comedy that tackles female sexuality with elegance, sensitivity and humor. Rather than relying on shock value or vulgarity, the director focuses on emotional honesty and communication within long-term relationships.
The Paris premiere unfolded in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere. Audience members had the opportunity to meet the film’s team and discover a comedy balancing laughter with meaningful social commentary. In a playful nod to the film’s subject matter, some attendees even received a Womanizer as a gift during the event.
The story centers on Fanny, played by Alexandra Lamy, and Tom, portrayed by François Cluzet, a married couple who have shared twenty happy years together. Their relationship is suddenly shaken when Fanny reveals that she has never experienced an orgasm. Determined to help his wife, Tom — an engineer — embarks on an unexpected mission: creating a device capable of revolutionizing female pleasure.
What follows is a touching and often hilarious journey filled with awkward situations, experimental prototypes hidden around the house and honest conversations about intimacy, desire and communication.
The film also explores broader themes such as education, generational taboos and women’s emotional relationships with sexuality. Through humor, the story succeeds in making a sensitive topic accessible to a wide audience.
One of the film’s greatest strengths lies in the chemistry between Alexandra Lamy and François Cluzet, sharing the screen together for the first time. François Cluzet portrays a caring and emotionally intelligent husband whose reaction challenges traditional stereotypes of masculinity.
The supporting cast also brings strong energy to the film, particularly Camille Aumont Carnel, whose liberated and outspoken character sharply contrasts with Fanny’s more reserved personality.
Blending comedy with social reflection, For Pleasure succeeds in opening conversations around female pleasure without ever becoming crude or uncomfortable. A modern romantic comedy with both humor and heart, the film aims to resonate with audiences far beyond France.
