Exhibition: Buddha, Golden Legend, Asian-Guimet National Arts Museum

The life of Buddha, the one called by the Evil (Buddha), the Blessed (Bhagavant) or the wise clan of the Shakya, has given rise to countless works in the religious arts of the Far East. For the first time in France an exhibition event is devoted to the life of the Buddha.

The exhibition highlights the rich traditions and the exemplary life of the founder of Buddhism. The main stages of Buddha’s life are traced from its birth in Lumbini Park in southern Nepal to its extinction in Kushinagara in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Buddhism, a non-violent spiritual path free of dogmas, has its roots in India, founded by an exceptional man, the Buddha (5th century BC). His teachings, the Jataka, are short fables or long narratives that recount past lives and are a source of cosmic cycle teaching in the cosmic cycle. Over its 547 previous lives, the future Buddha has experimented with the six possible conditions: god, anti-god, man, animal, ghost, damned. After cultivating Paramita or ten perfections: generosity, morality, renunciation, wisdom, effort, tolerance, truth, determination, caring love, equanimity (equality of spirit) he made the decision to revive among men in the style of a young prince, Siddhartha Gautama.

Four years of preparation, the exhibition presents through 159 works the keys to understanding the legend of the Buddha.
