Director Ryutaro Ninomiya in “Dreaming in Between” immerses us in a heavy atmosphere, frozen with the help of a close-up of a man “Ken Mitsuishi” alone, along a river, using a bridge.

The city seems emptied of its inhabitants, time is suspended, waiting.

The character of “Ken Mitsuishi” moves around the city to join his office. He hesitates and informs his office of his absence.

The character becomes aware of his loneliness and his wanderings. The cinephile witnesses his idleness. Time passed without any rebellion on his part.

This character realizes that he no longer has a connection, a conversation with his family, that his work no longer gives him satisfaction although he is highly appreciated by his hierarchy and his colleagues. In addition, his father is locked in silence. It feels completely out of step, out of whack. Nostalgia awaits him, pushes him to look back on his past and envisage the future differently, more freely.

This man then decides to release his word. He tries to free himself from his shackles due to right-thinking society. He decides to talk, to renew contacts, to get out of this monotony that was his life. He starts talking to his father, he finds one of his former high school girls with whom he exchanges. His youth and outspokenness take him out of his shackles.

The character of the assistant director played by “Ken Mitsuishi” navigates between two waters, two worlds, the living and the dying. “Ken Mitsuishi” decides to take control of his life, to find other markers of existence.

Ryutaro Ninomiya reveals to us moments of life of an assistant director “Ken Mitsuishi” in a city of today’s Japan.

Director Ryutaro Ninomiya frees this shackled man from his chains and brings him back to life.

Ryutaro Ninomiya offers us a refined cinema in the manner of OZU. Zen cinema. Long shots, without embellishment, the nobility of the line is omnipresent.

With Ryutaro Ninomiya, time passes, the essential remains.
