The Danielle Mitterrand Prize returns to center stage. In 2021, it was awarded on October 19 to the collective of “Journalières en Lutte de Huelva.”

What is the Danielle Mitterrand Prize?

Created in 2013 by the Danielle Mitterrand-France Libertés Foundation, the Danielle Mitterrand Prize rewards actors who give life to utopias and create alternatives for democratic, ecological and united change in the world. The winner of this 9th edition is the collective of “Journalières en Lutte de Huelva”. He succeeds the Bujuruna Juzuruna collective, a farm school in the Bekaa valley in Lebanon.

What is the Collective of “Journalists in Struggle of Huelva?”

The collective of “Daily fighters from Huelva to Lucha” acts to build a more just world through social emancipation and the empowerment of the dominated and invisible fringes.

The collective of “Journalières en Lutte de Huelva” was born in 2018, from the self-organization of exploited workers in the strawberry agricultural sector in Andalusia. The collective is fighting to obtain dignified living and working conditions, thanks to justice and the labor inspectorate. It also organizes information and awareness campaigns around health, racism and feminism.

The Danielle Mitterrand Foundation – France Libertés

Resulting from the merger of 3 associations created by Danielle Mitterrand (“Association du 21 Juin”, “Cause commune” and “La France est avec vous”), the Danielle Mitterrand – France Libertés Foundation has existed since March 1986. It bears the name of the wife of the former head of state, François Mitterrand, and has been recognized as being of public utility. Since 1991, it enjoys consultative status with the United Nations. “In addition, it has known donors such as Pierre Bergé, who died in 2017; Philippe Starck, architect, industrialist, interior designer and creator of the Water Sheet, a sign of belonging to the community of” water carriers , and stylist Agnès Troublé. (Agnès b.)

Its objective is the defense of human rights and the common goods of the living, thus contributing to the construction of a more united world on the whole planet. It acts in different areas such as access to water for all or the right of peoples to dispose of their wealth. It is a precious help to support the resistance of peoples and individuals oppressed in their freedoms. It also provides support to all those exposed to poverty, whatever their social condition, as a result of a natural disaster.

The foundation has participated in many actions such as supporting the Tibetan people, rebuilding the educational and social system in Cambodia, the fight against Apartheid and South Africa, the defense of the Kurdish people or the fight for health security in Africa. Thanks to the foundation, the universal right to water was achieved in 2010 by the UN General Assembly, then by Human Rights.

When Danielle Mitterrand died, her son Gilbert became president of the association. Since 2013, France Libertés has awarded 2 prizes each year. Since 2020, there is only one winner.
