French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron welcomed Their Royal Highnesses Guillaume de Luxembourg and Stéphanie de Luxembourg to the Élysée Palace on 1 July 2026. The meeting highlighted the strong partnership between France and Luxembourg while addressing European cooperation, innovation, defence and current international challenges.

PARIS – On 1 July 2026, French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron welcomed Their Royal Highnesses Guillaume de Luxembourg and Stéphanie de Luxembourg to the Élysée Palace, reaffirming the close friendship between France and the Luxembourg. Coming only months after Grand Duke Guillaume’s accession to the throne in October 2025, the meeting reflected both the continuity of bilateral relations and a shared commitment to addressing Europe’s evolving political, technological and security challenges.

The visit formed part of an active diplomatic agenda at the Élysée, where France has recently hosted several foreign leaders. Beyond the ceremonial welcome, the discussions demonstrated the importance both countries attach to maintaining a close dialogue on issues affecting not only their bilateral partnership but also the future of the European Union.

A relationship built on proximity and trust

France and Luxembourg share one of Europe’s closest bilateral relationships. Geography, history and deep economic integration have created strong ties that extend well beyond traditional diplomacy.

Every day, thousands of cross-border workers travel between the two countries, making cooperation on transport, employment, infrastructure and regional development essential for both governments. These practical links have transformed the Franco-Luxembourg border into one of the most integrated cross-border regions within the European Union.

The meeting at the Élysée provided an opportunity to reaffirm this long-standing partnership while exploring new areas of cooperation capable of supporting sustainable growth and regional competitiveness.

Innovation at the centre of bilateral cooperation

Among the key subjects discussed were cooperation in space technologies, artificial intelligence and defence.

These sectors have become increasingly important as European countries seek to strengthen technological sovereignty while reducing strategic dependencies in a rapidly changing global environment.

Luxembourg has developed a strong international reputation in the space economy and satellite industries, while France remains one of Europe’s leading aerospace and defence powers. Expanding cooperation in research, innovation and advanced technologies offers significant opportunities for both countries and contributes to broader European ambitions for technological leadership.

Artificial intelligence also featured prominently among the strategic priorities discussed, reflecting its growing importance for economic development, public services, security and industrial competitiveness.

Coordinating European responses to global crises

International affairs also occupied an important place during the discussions.

The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to shape Europe’s security environment and foreign policy priorities. France and Luxembourg reiterated the importance of close consultation among European partners to support diplomatic efforts, maintain regional stability and coordinate responses to international crises.

Such exchanges illustrate how bilateral meetings increasingly serve as opportunities to strengthen European coordination on issues that extend far beyond national borders.

A symbolic meeting following the Grand Duke’s accession

The visit also carried considerable symbolic importance.

President Macron had attended the accession ceremony of Grand Duke Guillaume on 3 October 2025, underlining France’s commitment to its relationship with Luxembourg. Welcoming the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess to Paris only a few months later reinforced that message of continuity and mutual respect.

The warm atmosphere observed during the official welcome reflected the personal rapport between the two couples while highlighting the longstanding friendship between their respective countries.

A busy diplomatic day at the Élysée

Following the meeting with the Luxembourgish royal couple, President Macron continued his diplomatic programme by hosting António José Seguro for a working lunch.

The succession of high-level meetings demonstrated France’s continued engagement with its European partners at a time when cooperation remains essential to address economic uncertainty, technological transformation and international security challenges.

Strengthening Europe’s future together

The meeting between France and Luxembourg highlighted more than the excellent bilateral relationship between two neighbouring countries. It illustrated how European cooperation increasingly depends on close partnerships capable of addressing shared challenges through dialogue, innovation and coordinated action.

Whether discussing cross-border mobility, technological innovation, defence cooperation or international security, both governments reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening a partnership that has become an important component of European integration.

As Europe faces a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape, the discussions held at the Élysée Palace demonstrated that enduring diplomatic relationships remain a cornerstone of stability and cooperation. The visit of Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie therefore represented not only a symbolic moment in Franco-Luxembourg relations but also a renewed commitment to building a stronger and more resilient Europe.
