Cannes 2026 Ignites the Spirit of World Cinema Once Again

The Cannes Film Festival once again turns Cannes into the global capital of cinema and artistic creativity.

For eleven days, the Cannes Film Festival once again transforms the French Riviera into the beating heart of world cinema.

More than 40,000 festivalgoers from over 150 countries have gathered on the Croisette for the 79th edition of the legendary festival, celebrating cinema through premieres, discoveries, artistic conversations and unforgettable moments shared between filmmakers and audiences.

This year, twenty-two films are competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or, hoping to succeed It Was Just an Accident by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi.

The opening ceremony immediately set an emotional tone for the festival. New Zealand director Peter Jackson received an honorary Palme d’Or in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to international cinema.

The tribute highlighted Cannes’ ongoing commitment to honoring filmmakers whose work transcends generations and continues to influence the global film industry.

Another major moment of the evening was the screening of the opening film Electric Venus (La Vénus électrique) by French director Pierre Salvadori.

Starring Pio Marmaï and Anaïs Demoustier, the film combines fantasy, melancholy and humor through the story of a struggling carnival performer in 1920s Paris who pretends to communicate with the dead in order to help a grieving painter rediscover life and creativity.

Known for blending emotional depth with poetic comedy, Pierre Salvadori continues the tradition of distinctive French opening films following works by Michel Hazanavicius and Quentin Dupieux in previous editions.

This year’s jury is chaired by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, joined by international figures including actress Demi Moore and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao.

Ahead of the festival, Park Chan-wook emphasized that awards should honor films capable of enduring for “50 or 100 years,” focusing purely on artistic merit beyond nationality, gender or political ideology.

That vision reflects the enduring spirit of Cannes itself.

More than a glamorous red carpet event, Cannes remains one of the few places where global cinema can truly come together. Filmmakers, producers, critics, actors and cinephiles from every continent gather not only to celebrate movies, but also to discuss the future of storytelling in a rapidly changing industry.

At a time when streaming platforms, artificial intelligence and shifting audience habits continue to transform entertainment worldwide, Cannes still represents the artistic soul of cinema.

Along the Croisette, luxury hotels and beachside venues host industry meetings while crowds line up outside theaters hoping to discover the next masterpiece. Yet despite the glamour and celebrity attention, the emotional power of cinema remains at the center of the festival.

This year’s selection once again reflects the diversity of world cinema, with films exploring identity, political tensions, memory, love and social change through radically different artistic styles.

As night falls over Cannes and the lights dim inside the Grand Théâtre Lumière, audiences continue to experience what makes the festival unique: the collective emotion of cinema shared across languages, cultures and borders.

For eleven days, Cannes reminds the world that cinema is still capable of bringing humanity together through stories, imagination and emotion.
