The Coronavirus, a theme chosen by artists to fight the pandemic

Since confinement, the art world has been inspired by Covid 19 to express its support for the sick and all those who work on the front line during this difficult period.

Since March 19, 2020, the first art museum on the Covid-19 has “opened” on Instagram, a crossroads and showcase for creatives, to exhibit works from around the world. The “Covid Art Museum” presents online the work of artists exclusively inspired by the theme of confinement and the virus. Created by “The Museum”, creative by artists from Barcelona, it will become “the creative memory of a unique moment in the history of mankind”. One month after its creation, it already brought together 800 works, today it has 35,000 contributions. Each work is an original creation proposed by a painter, an illustrator, a sculptor, a photographer, an animator, amateur or professional.

-Other initiatives were born from the public and artists like #tussenkunstenqurantaine (art in quarantine), launched on March 14 by 3 co-tenants living in Amsterdam including Anneloes Officer in order to reinterpret a masterpiece. They were quickly supported by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and then relayed by museums around the world. To date, there are more than 60,000 reinterpretations from around the world.

-A national competition, “Reinterpreting works from French collections” #artenquarantaine, organized 5 weeks later by CLIC (Club d’Innovation et Culture) France and more than 20 French museum institutions, brings together creations born from the health crisis ravaging the world and containment. There is a giant virus replacing the terrestrial globe, famous people wearing a mask, Mona Lisa collecting rolls of toilet paper….

From March 23 until May 25, it is possible to participate. To do this, choose a work on the art images site “art.rmngp.fr” or on the site of one of the partner museums ( the museums of the city of Paris (Paris Musées), the RMNGP, the art and fine arts museums of 20 cities in France: Aix-en-Provence, Angers, Cae, Chantilly, Dijon, Grenoble, Lens, Lille , Lyon, Montpellier, Nancy, Nantes, Nîmes, Paris, Rennes, Roubaix, Rouen, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Valence, Villeneuve d’Ascq); take a photo of yourself; share it on Facebook or Instagram with the mention #tussenkuntstenquarantaine, or #artenquarantaine and the @ or # where the work comes from. Photos of works published before March 23 will be republished on the author’s Facebook or Instagram account with the tag [email protected]. The best creations (10 to 12) will receive at the end of June 2020: 1 Public Prize (vote on site) and / or 1 Jury Prize (made up of the founder of the world challenge # tussenkunstquarantaine, 2 directors / representatives of French museums, a digital artist, a cultural journalist and an influencer). The choice will be made according to aesthetics, relevance, originality or humor.

In France, the exhibition “We are Covid’Art”, initiated by Anath Compagnon, should be held in autumn in Paris. An auction of the works of the artists who participated will be held in favor of the association “The voice of the Child”, an ephemeris of 365 works united in one will travel in France, Spain, Russia and India. This is the signature concept of “We are Covid’Art”.
