President Klaus Iohannis will begin his second term on 21 December.
The term of office of the President of Romania is 5 years and is exercised from the date of the oath.

President Klaus Iohannis thanked his constituents for their confidence in the speech delivered during the solemn sitting of the Constitutional Court:

Mister President of the Constitutional Court,

Honored members of the Constitutional Court,

Distinguished audience,

Mister Prime Minister,

The vote given to me by the Romanians for a new term as President of Romania represents for me a special honor and, at the same time, a great responsibility.

My first term as president, which will officially end in a very short time, has been a challenge. For five years, I have been in constant contact with the real problems of society and by my actions, I strongly opposed these regressive tendencies which I considered as a real danger for democracy.

We are at 30, from the moment when the Romanians decided to project their future in democracy, and the constitutional construction has responded to this desire by establishing mechanisms for the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms and for the proper functioning of state authorities.

It is imperative that the state actors who animate this construction act in the interest of the Romanian nation. Ensuring respect for the Constitution and ensuring its supremacy, in its spirit and in its letter, as the last obstacle to derogation from democratic rules, is of vital importance.

In all their activities, governments must act in good faith and show genuine commitment to the basic law and democratic values.

By virtue of the constitutional role of the President of Romania, I will commit myself to a better functioning of the authorities and the public institutions, so that they really serve the Romanians. I will continue to be an ardent defender of respect for the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, the supreme values enshrined in the Constitution, in the spirit of the democratic traditions of the Romanian people and the ideals of the December 1989 revolution defended with sacrifices bloody 30 years ago.

I will continue to ensure respect for the Constitution and, in the future, I will maintain with determination the values of the rule of law and the European course of Romania. It is not only the principles that have always guided my actions and my decisions, but also the direction in which the Romanians have shown, not once, but three times this year – in the elections to the European Parliament, in the referendum on justice and the presidential – they want our country to go. The route chosen by the Romanians is a one-way street, to which, by their activity, all the authorities of the State must align themselves.

Romania is a state of law and the Romanians are a nation with deeply democratic reflexes. Thus, those who launched the assault against the independence of justice were punished in the most severe and legitimate way by the vote of the people. This is the strongest sign that all political and institutional decision-makers must assume as inalienable the principles according to which no one is above the law and that of the loyal cooperation between the public authorities.

The development of our society does not concern people or functions, but the duty to do good to our country, contributing directly to the progress of Romania, invested with the confidence of the Romanians. And I am convinced that, on the basis of the democratic values we have defended over all these years, we will build a normal, strong and prosperous Romania, which we want!

Thank you so much!

Klaus Iohannis
