Singer Mylène Farmer and the cast of « Dalloway, » by French director and screenwriter Yann Gozlan, walked the red carpet at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
While Mylène Farmer lends her voice to a mysterious artificial intelligence, Cécile de France (Clarissa Katsef) takes on the lead role, playing a novelist lacking inspiration who talks about Virginia Woolf, and who joins a hyperconnected artist residency. She is assigned a virtual assistant named Dalloway (Mylène Farmer), who becomes increasingly intrusive over time.
Tatiana de Rosnay is the author of the novel « Les Fleurs de l’ombre » (The Flowers of Shadows), which has been adapted into the thriller « Dalloway » by Yann Gozlan.
In the residence, each tenant has an artificial intelligence: a voice (for Clarissa, her voice is Mylène Farmer), which wakes them up, turns on the TV or radio, helps them manage their appointments or make their shopping list, monitors their blood sugar levels, and so on. While Clarissa is experiencing a lack of inspiration, the director of the residence pressures her to finish her novel.
« Dalloway, » Clarissa Katsef’s Artificial Intelligence, asks her intimate questions about her past, particularly the death of her young son.
Her virtual assistant feeds off her past and her emotions to « acquire » her and replace her.
He advises her never to reveal her secrets to an artificial intelligence.
Co-produced by the Belgian companies Panache Productions and La Compagnie Cinématographique, « Dalloway » takes place in the near future.
Heat waves are hitting Paris, and the « virus » is forcing residents to test themselves daily using a cotton swab inserted into their mouths and to quarantine if the result is positive.
Yann Gozlan sets his story in sterile, icy, geometric settings, and in an anxiety-inducing context that creates a paranoid atmosphere, given that the story is based on the Covid-19 era, and the curfew also prevents Parisians from going out at any time of day.
Cécile de France will also be walking the steps this year for « La Venue de l’avenir » by Cédric Klapisch, which is being shown out of competition.
