Marraine De Cœur: When One Big Heart Turns Trials into Hope

Sometimes, a single person is all it takes to move mountains. Carla Morri is living proof of that.

After twenty years of intense volunteering, most people would have taken a well-deserved break. Not Carla. When the association she had been working with had to stop some of its activities, she simply refused to stop herself.

“I didn’t want to create yet another association that has to do everything,” she explains with her usual simplicity. “I can’t be everywhere on the ground, even though the temptation is strong and I still go sometimes. So I thought: what if I simply became the ‘godmother’ – the marraine – of several small organisations that are already right there in the hospitals, beside the children and adults who need them most? I raise funds, I bring generous people together, and I redistribute every single month, no exceptions.”

That is how Marraine De Cœur was born, almost three years ago.

Today, eleven partner associations receive a monthly grant to support their work in paediatric and adult oncology, neonatology, rare genetic diseases, autoimmune disorders and severe disabilities. The twelfth place is deliberately kept vacant: “It’s waiting for the next cause that touches my heart and that I won’t be able to say no to,” Carla says with a smile.

Every December, she goes one step further: she invites all eleven associations to a big family-style lunch, full of laughter and sometimes tears, and gives each of them a second, exceptional year-end grant. “It’s my Christmas present to them… and to everyone who has trusted us throughout the year.”

Total transparency – “because you are entrusting me with money”

“Some people give me the equivalent of their monthly salary. I owe them absolute honesty. On our website, everything is public: every transfer, every supported association, every single euro, from day one. Go and check for yourselves – you’ll see exactly what we’ve done over the past two and a half years. I sleep soundly… and I hope you do too.”

And with a voice full of emotion, Carla adds: “I will keep doing this until my very last breath. Because when a child looks me in the eyes and says ‘thank you, marraine’, or when a mother hugs me, crying with relief… that’s when I know I made the right choice by carrying on.”
