The Irish actor, very smiley and excited at the idea of walking the steps of the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in his career.
The 29-year-old attracted attention on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival this Wednesday, May 21st. The Irish actor was there to present his new film « The History of Sound. » Dressed in a black Gucci suit, he walked the steps of the Palais du Festival, posing with the film’s cast.
While Josh O’Connor, one of the main actors, was conspicuous by his absence, many other stars shone on the red carpet. Teri Hatcher lit up the evening in a sublime emerald green gown that shimmered with a thousand lights. Actresses Mélanie Thierry and Nadia Tereszkiewicz, accustomed to the splendor of Cannes, were also present, as was Naomi Campbell, dressed all in white. Nabilla and her husband, Thomas Vergara, Adriana Karembeu, and American actress Michelle Rodriguez all rocked the carpet like only Hollywood stars can!
The cast of the film Connemara, directed by Alex Lutz and starring Mélanie Thierry and Bastien Bouillon, were among the guests at Wednesday evening’s screening.
Director Oliver Hermanus tells the story of Lionel (Paul Mescal), a musician who, while studying in Boston, falls in love with David (Josh O’Connor). Their affair quickly ended, however, when World War I broke out, and David was drafted. Upon his return, David proposed to his lover that they undertake an unusual project: traveling from village to village in the northern United States to record popular pieces. The director envisioned his staging as mirroring these folk songs, a choice that contradicted the promise made in the opening: Lionel confides that he not only hears music, but also tastes and visualizes it, assimilating each note to a distinct color. His film, « The History of Sound, » is a blend of drama and melodrama.
In 1917, he left the family farm to attend the Boston Conservatory, where he met David, a brilliant and attractive composition student. But their budding relationship was abruptly cut short when David was drafted at the end of the war. Over the next decades, Lionel experienced recognition, success, and other romances as he traveled throughout Europe. But his memories with David still haunt him, until one day a trace of their shared work resurfaces and reveals to him how much this relationship resonated more strongly than all others.
In September 2015 in Venice, the screening of Oliver Hermanus’s film « The Endless River, » presented in competition, was poorly received by the audience. Ten years later, he walked another, more prestigious red carpet with his film « The History of Sound, » which received applause at its presentation.
