Paris: Topical Carnival Celebrates the Amazon for its 25th Anniversary

For its 25th edition, the Tropical Carnival honored the Amazon and Brazil this Sunday, July 6th.

For its 25th edition, the Tropical Carnival honored the Amazon and Brazil this Sunday, July 6th.

The Paris Tropical Carnival is a festive event that has been celebrating the cultural richness of the Antilles and French overseas territories since 2017. Every year, thousands of dancers and dozens of floats parade through the streets of Paris, transforming the capital into a vibrant tropical scene.

This unique event allows Parisians and tourists to discover Caribbean, African, European, and Native American traditions through sumptuous costumes, meticulous choreography, and captivating rhythms. Between artistic competitions and the election of the Carnival King and Queen, the Paris Tropical Carnival offers a guaranteed change of scenery in the heart of the Parisian summer!

The parade was organized by the Paris Tropical Carnival Federation in partnership with the Paris City Hall.

The 25th edition of the Paris Tropical Carnival was inaugurated by Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, and Jeanne d’Hauteserre, Mayor of the 8th arrondissement of Paris, surrounded by prestigious figures from the carnival world and the Queen of the Paris Tropical Carnival. Among the dignitaries present were Ian Comfort, President of the Notting Hill Carnival in London; George Paulangevin, former Minister and former Member of Parliament for Paris; Jeanne d’Hauteserre, Mayor of the 8th arrondissement; and Audrey Pulvar, Deputy Mayor of Paris.

Some twenty troupes, costumed in feathers and sequins, enlivened the Champs-Élysées to the rhythm of samba, bringing to life the blend of cultures and diversity.

It’s gray in Paris this Sunday, July 6th, but not everywhere. At least not on the Champs-Élysées, where the Tropical Carnival took place, as it has since 2017, to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Some twenty associations came to parade from the Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe, enveloping the boulevard in feathers, sequins, costumes, and the rhythm of their samba.

This edition honors the Amazon and Brazil, to the delight of hundreds of spectators who came especially to enjoy the spectacle, even though the rain was also a factor, rivaling the carnival-goers, as well as the spectators and tourists who didn’t give up on attending the event.

This year, the City of Paris wished to further recognize the troupes’ quality and performance by awarding prizes to the winners.
