French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech in Romanian on Wednesday evening in Chisinau, where he met with President Maia Sandu and participated in the celebrations of the 34th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s independence, alongside German and Polish leaders.
“Good evening, Chisinau! Good evening, dear Moldovan friends! I am very happy to be here tonight, with Friedrich Merz and Donald Tusk, with Maia Sandu and all of you, gathered to celebrate the National Day of the Republic of Moldova. Thanks to you, tonight, the heart of Europe beats stronger than ever in Chisinau. I came to convey the message of friendship from the French people, who admire your fight for democracy and justice,” Macron said in Romanian.
A Message of Friendship and Support
“You can count on our support.”
“The Republic of Moldova can be proud of the progress made since independence and can have confidence in its European destiny and future.”
“You are already part of the European family, and you can count on our support and Europe’s respect. Europe is unity in diversity, respect for all identities and cultures. It is a project of peace, a unique partnership, and solidarity among equal countries, serving all citizens.”
Macron on Moldova’s Role in Europe
“Our European Union will be stronger with Moldova, and Moldova will also be stronger and more prosperous in Europe.”
“Together, we will write a new chapter in the history of Moldova and Europe. That is why we are here today with you and with President Maia Sandu, who has fought from day one, with great courage, for an independent, strong, democratic, and European-anchored Moldova. Long live the Republic of Moldova! Long live Europe! Long live Moldova in Europe! Long live independent Moldova! Long live united Europe!”
Statement from the Moldovan Presidency
“The presence of European leaders at the National Day celebrations represents a strong signal of friendship and respect for our people, but also a clear confirmation that the European path of the Republic of Moldova is not a distant dream, but a shared project currently under development,” said the Presidential Administration in Chisinau.
