Cannes Film Festival 2025: Richard Linklater’s « Nouvelle Vague » Refreshes the Style

Early in the evening, the red carpet premiered the film « New Wave, » directed by American director Richard Linklater, in contention for the Palme d’Or.

Thanks to its captivating performances, « New Wave » stands out as a feature film bursting with ideas, charm, good humor, and nostalgia. On the red carpet, we saw Guillaume Marbeck, Zoey Deutch, Aubry Dullin, Richard Linklater, Quentin Tarantino, and others.

Jean-Luc Godard is Franco-Swiss, but he was born in Paris, just like the New Wave, a cinematic movement marked by its freedom, the central role of the writer-director in its creative process, and its desire to do away with a certain « French quality. »

A man in his early thirties (Kev Adams) is blissfully in love with his girlfriend. Suddenly, she leaves him when she realizes what his future holds: premature baldness. In six months, he’ll be bald as a ball. For support, he contacts his uncle (Michael Youn), who knows the subject well. Through improbable encounters, shock treatments, and flawed strategies, he must fight against his destiny. A feature film, which will be released in theaters in France on October 8th, retraces the making of Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard, a leading figure of the Nouvelle Vague movement in the 1960s.

Richard Linklater returns with « Nouvelle Vague, » a tribute to the cinematic movement of the 1950s and its greatest representatives. The genesis of « Breathless » features Godard, Truffaut, Chabrol, Seberg, and Belmondo, in a playtime atmosphere among good friends, at a time when cinema was still developing its codes.
