Lumières Awards 2026: François Ozon’s The Stranger Takes Top Honors

François Ozon’s The Stranger leads the Lumières Awards 2026

François Ozon’s The Stranger leads the Lumières Awards 2026, confirming its status as a major contender this awards season.

The 31st Lumières Awards, voted by international film journalists in Paris, crowned François Ozon’s The Stranger as Best Film, setting the tone for the French awards season.

The 31st Lumières Awards ceremony took place on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris. Often described as the French equivalent of the Golden Globes, the Lumières Awards are voted on by international film journalists based in Paris and are widely seen as an early indicator of the upcoming César Awards.

Leading the night was The Stranger (L’Étranger), directed by François Ozon and adapted from Albert Camus’ iconic novel. Nominated six times, the black-and-white drama won three major awards, including Best Film, Best Actor for Benjamin Voisin, and Best Cinematography for Manu Dacosse. Distributed by Gaumont, the film has also enjoyed strong box office success, drawing approximately 760,000 admissions in France.

Another standout title was Nouvelle Vague by Richard Linklater, which received Best Director and Best Male Newcomer for Guillaume Marbeck. Released by ARP Sélection, the film attracted more than 146,000 moviegoers during its theatrical run.

The Best Actress award went to Léa Drucker for her performance in Case 137 (Dossier 137), directed by Dominik Moll, further confirming the film’s critical recognition.

Organized by the Académie des Lumières, which brings together correspondents from 38 countries, the ceremony once again highlighted its role as a key milestone in the French awards season, just weeks before the announcement of the César nominations on January 28 and the ceremony on February 27.
