Italy is paralyzed by the general strike

The national mobilization took place in 43 cities, aimed at opposing the unfair and ill-advised policies of the government.

The mobilization was called by the CGIL and the UIL to demand a change in the budget, considered totally insufficient to solve the country’s problems, and to demand an increase in the purchasing power of wages and pensions and the financing of healthcare, education, public services and industrial policies.

Today, Friday 29 November, an eight-hour general strike took place in Italy, called by the CGIL and UIL trade unions, to demand significant changes to the government’s budget law. The unions are demanding higher wages and pensions, increased funding for healthcare, education and public services, as well as strategic investments in industrial policy.

Veneto stopped to protest against a budget measure that condemns workers and pensioners to 7 years of austerity. Workplace participation was very high: over 80% in the metalworking and manufacturing sector with peaks of 100% in companies such as Zanardi in Verona, Dab and All.co in Padua, and 90% at Carel, Parker, Electrolux, Mpm Aia. , Inglesina baby. In the logistics sector, there was 100% participation in the GLS warehouse, the CFP Carraro logistics contract warehouse at 100% in Rovigo. Over 70% in transport (despite the injunction) and in healthcare and schools. And for the first time, Amazon workers (Rovigo) also went on strike.

The squares of Padua, Rovigo, Treviso (with Belluno), Venice, Verona Vicenza were filled with over 20,000 workers and pensioners, united to demand an increase in wages and pensions, to finance health, education and public services, to invest in industrial policies to stop the decline of the country and our region.

The day of protest in Bologna began early in the morning with pickets on the tram construction sites, in front of schools (Altrovandi Rubbiani) and in front of many important companies, public bodies and department stores in the area (Automobili Lamborghini, Coop Alleanza 3.0 in Piazza Martiri, In’s in San Donato, Acer, Inps, Magazzino Brt in Calderara di Reno…). Very strong participation, in all sectors of the world of work, which was manifested in the important regional procession that paraded through the streets of the city before converging on Piazza Maggiore with the interventions of the regional secretary of the Uil, Marcello Borghetti, delegates and delegates from different sectors and territories, and the conclusions of the general secretary of the CGIL Maurizio Landini.

A procession – the note continues – which saw the CGIL of Bologna consolidate the convergences of the autumn mobilizations with social realities, student movements, civil society and for the environment, which spoke from our microphone giving its full support to the strike and explaining the reasons for its strike. a categorical no to the authoritarian policies of this government (from Arci to Cassero, from students to Legambiente). A Piazza Maggiore filled with 50 thousand citizens, workers, pensioners, students finally gave back to Bologna its identity, after the disfigurement of November 9: that of a deeply antifascist, antiracist and supportive city, a city in favor of peace, rights and social justice.

Data on support for the strike recorded in a sample of local companies: Ima 70%, Lamborghini 95%, Ducati 85%, Marelli 90%, Municipal Libraries of Bologna 100%. Many nests are closed. The first data on representative samples give important results. In trade and tourism, abstention was 60% in the thermal sector of Rimini and Riccione, 30% at Ieg Spa, 50% in the companies Zara, Dussman, Camst and Autogrill. 45% membership in Apt and 50% in RG Stampa, 30% in Formula Servizi and Coopservice. In the construction and wood sectors, membership peaks of 85% were reached with Olivieri mobili, Sicer 30%, Ferretti Yacht 75%. In the metallurgical sector, 95% of the employees of the SCM of Villa Verucchio, 80% of the SCM Rimini industrial, 75% of the Fom went on strike.

In the Rimini school district, Di Duccio remained closed with full participation of school staff, while at the Liceo Serpieri the participation exceeded 50%.

The strike proclaimed to counter the unfair and wrong choices of the government also saw a strong participation from the Reggio Emilia region. Thousands of people travelled to Bologna by bus and train, with a very strong participation in the Reggio Emilia region. Among the most representative companies of the various production sectors where workers have crossed their arms, very high adhesion percentages have been reached: Argo Tractors 80%, Dana Motion System 100%, Interpump – Machinery Department 100% – assembly 90%, Arag (production) 60%, Manifattura San Maurizio 96%, Procter&Gamble (production) 70%, Graniti Fiandre (production) 60%, Nurseries and kindergartens 85%, Coop Alleanza 3.0 30%, Cir Food 80%, Coopservice Supervision 15%, Lidl 50%, Sicuritalia 10%, Margaritelli Ferroviaria (Zurco) 85%, Laiteries Granterre 70%, F.lli Veroni 70%, Cantine Riunite & Civ 20%, Afv Logistic 90%.

Here are the first provisional data concerning the strikers in Liguria. In Genoa and the Metropolitan City, Porto 85%. Extended maintenance 100%, Servizitalia Bolzaneto 80%. Lycée Gobetti: two out of three schools closed. Ic Chiavari II 3 out of 5 schools closed, Lycée Cassini one out of 2 schools closed. Ic Quezzi: 2 out of 6 complexes closed, the others open only in the morning. Historic Centre IC: closed. Lycée Marconi Delpino: 3 out of 5 schools closed. Ic Teglia closed.

In La Spezia: Isa 8, 70% ATA staff, Cosme 60%. In Savona: Municipality of Albisola Marina 70%, Korian 100%, Alstom 80%, Bitron 75% Cabour 70%, Lidl 62%, Local public transport 80%. In Imperia: Camporosso 100% support for closed schools, school catering Camst Sanremo, 100% support for 3 closed schools, private security institute Cosmopolitan 100% support. Even the automotive sector – Paggio told Ansa – is an important part of the Umbrian production system and is in great difficulty. In this context of income and pensions at their lowest, the government is responding with increases of three euros per month and this is unacceptable. Even local authorities, already exhausted, are being hit by new cuts that compromise services.

Wide support for the general strike in Sicily and a large turnout in the street demonstration in Palermo. This is a clear signal to the government: there is a Sicily that says enough and demands development policies, for work, for dignity at work, for services. This was stated by the general secretaries of the CGIL and UIL Sicily, Alfio Mannino and Luisella Lionti, at the end of the demonstration that saw over 15,000 people from all over Sicily march through the centre of Palermo.

In Bergamo, about 4 thousand workers, retirees and citizens took part in the procession that started from Piazza Pontida and traveled through the streets of the center to the Prefecture, via Tasso. There, some worker delegates spoke, while inside the Prefecture, Marco Toscano, general secretary of the CGIL of Bergamo, and Pasquale Papaianni, provincial coordinator of the Uil of Bergamo, met with Dr. Marisa Amabile, head of the cabinet.

At least 2,500 people took part in the demonstration this morning in Trento convened by the CGIL and the UIL on the occasion of the general strike day against the national stability law. A long snake of workers from all sectors and retirees ran along via Rosmini and via Santa Croce.

In the Aosta Valley, the number of members is high. 75% in Cogne Acciai Speciali, 20% construction, 30% agri-food industry, 40% transport. Local public transport 80%, Engineering 50%, Grivel 50%. Huge participation of Milanese workers in the general strike and a long snake that started this morning from Corso Monforte and now arrives with its head on Piazza San Babila while the queue is still on Corso di Porta Vittoria. According to the unions, more than 15,000 participants took to the streets.

In Abruzzo and Molise, protests and demonstrations were encouraged because of the general strike proclaimed today by the CGIL and the UIL. One of these took place in Pescara, in front of the Prefecture. The secretary of the CGIL of Pescara Luca Ondifero said on the sidelines of the demonstration: « we say no to a maneuver that does not respond to the needs of workers, pensioners and young people and today there is this strike that affects all sectors. Workers have no answers in the face of widespread precariousness, with wages that are not adjusted to inflation and we are therefore here to express our disagreement so that this maneuver is modified given that today we are unable to give answers, for example even in health matters, with waiting lists that are too long and with a lack of personnel and investment ».

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the square of Cagliari for the regional procession, on the occasion of the general strike proclaimed by the CGIL and the UIL against the government’s maneuver. The very first data of the general strike in Sardinia for the entire local public transport sector, published by the regional secretary of Filt Arnaldo Boeddu, amount to 70% on average. The strike relating to the air sector also began at 10 am with the first cancellations of flights arriving and departing from the island’s airports. Similar situation in maritime transport with the small islands of La Maddalena and Carloforte where the membership reaches a percentage with peaks of 70%.

Today, in Naples, there are at least 30,000 marching for the general strike proclaimed by the CGIL and the UIL against the government’s budgetary measure.

Turin and Piedmont do not accept that the government eliminates work, they do not accept that we continue only with precarious work. Thus Giorgio Airaudo, general secretary of the CGIL Piemonte on the occasion of the strike underway in Turin. « We want wage increases for workers: they are entitled to them since they pay 90% of the IRPEF with retirees. The initiatives will continue, now let’s renew the contracts and fight against precariousness, even with the referendums that will take place », adds Airaudo.

Parma an average support of between 70 and 80% », writes the provincial CGIL in a note accompanying the data. The first findings, not definitive, on abstention in the Parma region show, in the food sector: Casalasco 70% (3 lines out of 4 stopped), Parmalat 75% (sterile plants stopped), Paren 80% (repackaging only), Citterio 100% also includes the cooperative and 6 lines out of 6 stopped. In logistics: Number 1 is 90%, Ldm srl 50%, Salt 60%, Co.ser.ma 100%, Amazon contracts: 30%, Gls contracts: 30%, Zampieri Halding 60%, Gazzetta di Parma contract (Elicaservizi / Funivia soc. Coop) 70%; Inovys supply Stef 30%. In the metalworking sector, 85% membership at Sidel, 80% at Linkotek and 100% at Crown. Most educational services are closed both in the capital and in the province. More than 50% of the workforce has crossed their arms in collective catering and large-scale distribution.

Participation in the general strike was a major strike against the government with a rate between 75 and 95% at the national level.
