The Zelensky Couple’s European Tour for Peace

Ukrainian President Zelensky and First Lady Olena visit Europe to strengthen international support and advocate for peace in Ukraine.

In a tense geopolitical context, marked by Russian advances on the Ukrainian front and accelerated diplomatic efforts for a U.S.-backed peace plan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena Zelenska embarked on a brief European tour. With determination and a touch of humanity, they first arrived in Paris on Monday, December 1, before continuing to Dublin on Tuesday, December 2. These visits, symbols of steadfast Western solidarity, highlighted not only security and economic challenges but also the human connections that transcend conflict.

Paris: A High-Level Meeting Amid Diplomatic Urgency

The Ukrainian presidential couple was warmly received at the Élysée Palace by Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte. During the meeting, the two heads of state discussed “the situation and the conditions for a just and lasting peace,” in line with the Geneva talks and the U.S. plan initiated by Donald Trump. Sanctions against Russia, security guarantees for Kyiv, and ongoing negotiations dominated the discussions, as Russian forces continue their advance in eastern Ukraine—the largest in a year, according to a recent AFP analysis.

In the United States, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the previous day’s discussions with a Ukrainian delegation in Florida as “productive,” while acknowledging that “work remains to be done.” Meanwhile, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff is en route to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin, highlighting the acceleration of transatlantic mediation efforts.

The Paris visit also took place amid internal challenges for Kyiv, including the resignation of long-time chief of staff Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s main negotiator with Washington, which weakened President Zelensky politically.

The Key Role of the First Ladies: Culture and Humanity

After the official discussions, Olena Zelenska and Brigitte Macron attended a lunch at the Élysée and a cultural program at the Quai d’Orsay. France launched yesterday, during the visit, the cultural project “Journey to Ukraine – Culture Strikes Back,” inaugurated at the Théâtre de la Ville in the presence of Olena Zelenska and Minister of Culture Rachida Dati.

Since the start of the conflict, the two First Ladies have demonstrated remarkable solidarity, mobilizing to support Ukrainian refugee children and facilitating their reception in French hospitals.

Dublin: Active Neutrality and Renewed Commitment

On December 2, the Zelensky couple was welcomed in Dublin by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister of State for European Affairs Thomas Byrne. This was the first official visit of a Ukrainian president to Ireland, marking a historic milestone for both nations.

The agenda included a meeting with President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin, an honor guard, and a speech before the Irish Parliament at Leinster House. Zelensky praised Ireland as “a neutral but not indifferent country,” expressing gratitude for humanitarian aid and the hosting of Ukrainian refugees.

Ireland announced an additional €125 million in aid to Ukraine and signed a five-year roadmap for bilateral cooperation, with the hope that Ukraine will join the European Union within that framework.

Toward a Lasting Peace?

These visits illustrate a united Europe confronting Russian aggression and humanize the conflict. In Paris, diplomacy and culture took center stage; in Dublin, practical aid and active neutrality were emphasized. However, challenges remain: Russian advances, internal tensions in Kyiv, and the U.S. peace plan perceived as unbalanced by some.

As Trump summarized: “Russia would like this to end, and Ukraine too.” For now, Volodymyr and Olena Zelensky leave with renewed promises and the weight of a nation awaiting peace.
