The 2024 Tropical Carnival in the colors of Olympism

The 22nd edition of the Paris Tropical Carnival took place on October 6, 2024 on the Champs Elysées.

The 22nd edition of the Paris Tropical Carnival took place on October 6, 2024 on the Champs Elysées. It was an opportunity to attend a magnificent colorful show to the sound of tropical music.

This year, the parade took place in the fall because of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Indeed, in other years, the city of Paris, in collaboration with the Paris Tropical Carnival Federation, chooses the first weekend of July to enchant Parisians and tourists with groups from all over France and the West Indies (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Reunion and Guyana). It is also an opportunity to highlight distant cultures from Asia or Latin America (Brazil, or Colombia…). For the 2024 edition, nearly 4,000 dancers in colorful and sequined costumes and a dozen floats were present on the most beautiful avenue in the world, to share this friendly and colorful event despite a few drops of rain. This year’s theme was “Overseas Territories United by the Olympics”. We could also notice the presence of overseas champions at the head of the procession, including fencers Enzo Lefort and Yannick Borel.

We could also note that the torchbearers, Marie-José Pérec and Teddy Riner, are both from Guédeloupe and that nearly a third of the medalists of the 2024 Games are from the Antilles and Polynesia. The theme of these games, like that of the “Nuit Blanche”, highlighted the overseas territories and was found in the Tropical Carnival where around twenty groups represented the tradition of the West Indian, Guyanese, Caribbean and Latin American carnivals.

As every year since 2017, the parade left from the Champs-Elysées roundabout towards the Arc de Triomphe to return in front of the stand where the jury sits. However, there was a new feature for the 2024 edition. The City of Paris has decided to award 4 new prizes to the troupes for their quality and performance:
1st prize in all categories, “Grand Prix de la Ville de Pais” worth 3,000 euros.
Prize in the Music category with a prize of 500 euros.

Prize in the Costume category: 500 euros.
Prize in the Choreography category: 500 euros.

See you in 2025 for a 23rd edition of the Paris Carnival.
