Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud died at the age of 36 this Saturday, July 19.
Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid bin Talal Al-Saud died on Saturday, July 19, at the age of 36, after twenty years in a coma. The son of Prince Khalid bin Talal Al-Saud—himself the nephew of billionaire Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal—he was not a direct descendant of the King and Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman.
His death was confirmed by his father on social media. « With our hearts believing in the will and decree of Allah, and with deep sorrow, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today, » Prince Khaled bin Talal Al-Saud wrote on X, in a message accompanied by a photo of his son with his eyes closed.
Born in 1990, he had been nicknamed the « sleeping prince » since his car accident in 2005. He was then studying at a military school in London. Suffering from severe brain injuries and internal bleeding, including one to the brain, he was repatriated to the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he has since been in a coma and placed on life support.
His father had decided to keep him on life support. He regularly shared photos and videos on social media, asking for prayers for his son. Several signs, such as a moving head or twitching fingers, suggested an improvement. The « sleeping prince » has finally passed away.
The Saudi prince’s funeral will take place this Sunday, July 20, and will last three days, his family announced, at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
The announcement sparked strong emotion in Saudi Arabia and many countries in the region. The hashtag « Sleeping Prince » became very popular on social media after the announcement, with thousands of people offering their condolences.
