The new European champions arrived at the Élysée Palace at 6:30 p.m. for a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Carrying the Champions League trophy, Marquinhos and Nasser al-Khelaïfi led the way into the courtyard.
Among the guests accompanying the Parisian delegation are former PSG players Javier Pastore, Ludovic Giuly, and Yohan Cabaye, former French national handball goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer, recently retired tennis player Richard Gasquet, fencer Enzo Lefort, judoka Romane Dicko, Teddy Riner, and actor Gérard Darmon.
The political class is also present, with Minister of Sports Marie Barsacq, Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, President of the Île-de-France region Valérie Pécresse, and President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet also invited.
Paris Saint-Germain helped France collect numerous UEFA points thanks to their impressive 5-0 victory in the Champions League final against Inter Milan. After 14 years of waiting, marked by numerous disappointments and dismal evenings, the capital club finally triumphed by winning the first Champions League in its history. A victory achieved at the expense of Inter Milan, and in historic proportions (5-0) that no one could have ever truly imagined.
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi had promised during his New Year’s address to PSG staff at the end of January that the bonus awarded to the players for their exceptional Champions League performance would be shared among all 700 employees.
« We defend the French flag, we are a French club, we deserve it. There are many big clubs in France. Everyone criticizes France, saying we lack quality, but today we showed that we have great players. The goal? To win again. It’s been 14 years of work, we had the second-youngest team in the final, we’re building something for the future. » We have the best coach and the best sporting director in the world, we’re a great club. »
But no one knows on what basis the distribution will be determined, as the amount of the bonus reserved for the players remains secret for the time being. Employees have received confirmation that they will receive a bonus for winning the Champions League, but they have no idea how much will be shown on their pay slips. This initiative is a first in France.
Luis Enrique’s team will have earned a record 37,500 UEFA points this season, less than… Inter and their 40,000 points. It is the Milanese club’s excellent league run, which ended in 4th place, that allows them to finish higher than PSG.
