After Georges Simion’s visit to France, a diplomatic incident occurred in Europe, and the pro-Russian far-right lost the elections.

After all the ballots were counted, the centrist candidate received 53.6% of the vote. The leader of the nationalist AUR party, who initially claimed victory, citing « fraud, » finally conceded defeat overnight.

He was ahead of the far-right candidate George Simion, who came in first in the first round, and who, according to the final results, received 46.4% of the vote this Sunday. The results were released amid confusion. Nicusor Dan was initially tipped to lead before his rival, who denounced « fraud, » overtook him, before being relegated to second place.

The release of the first figures, showing Nicusor Dan as the winner, was initially greeted with confusion, with both candidates claiming victory. At Nicusor Dan’s headquarters, set up in a Bucharest park, the fifty-year-old smiled and hailed « the victory of a community of Romanians eager for profound change. » « Let’s savor this evening and starting tomorrow, let’s rebuild Romania, » he added, as his supporters chanted « Europe » and « Unity. »

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warmly congratulated Nicusor Dan on Sunday. « Romanians went to the polls en masse. They chose the promise of an open and prosperous Romania in a strong Europe, » she wrote on X. In neighboring Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed this « historic » success, recalling « the importance of having Romania as a reliable partner. »

French President Emmanuel Macron called Nicusor Dan and congratulated him, writing to X that he supported collaboration with Romania.
« Despite numerous attempts at manipulation, Romanians have chosen democracy, the rule of law, and the European Union this evening. France will stand by your side to strengthen our partnership and work together for a stronger, more sovereign, and more independent Europe, » congratulated Emmanuel Macron, also on X.

The election was marked by a high turnout in a tense atmosphere. Voter turnout was nearly 65%, compared to only 53% in the first round.

The Romanian people chose democracy, freedom, and Europe. Just as in the 2014 presidential elections, where Klaus Iohanis won, today it was Nicusor Dan’s turn. Romanians have chosen the leader who will represent them for five years.
