Meryl Streep, the Hollywood legend, returned to Cannes after 35 years, received Tuesday evening, during the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival, an honorary Palme d’Or which immortalizes her “indelible place in the ‘history of cinema’.

It must be said that Meryl Streep knows how to play everything. In nearly 50 years of career, she has been by turns powerful woman, inflexible leader or torn mother. The actress received another ovation on Wednesday afternoon during her meeting with the public. The opportunity to look back on the 64 feature films that make her such a familiar figure. She is an example for many women in cinema.

In her forties, the actress seeing her roles diminish, made a turn towards comedy, until the triumph in 2006 of “The Devil Wears Prada”.
Moved behind her black-framed glasses and dressed in an ivory draped dress, Meryl Streep wowed the audience this evening.

Rejoicing to see “progress” regarding the equity of roles, Meryl Streep added that “the biggest stars in the world are currently women! With the exception of Tom Cruise, perhaps…” Faced with the ovation received during this Cannes meeting, Miranda Priestly would surely have thought “everyone dreams of being in our place”.

The Cannes Festival which this year sees the return to the Croisette of several filmmakers from across the Atlantic, including Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader and Kevin Costner, a festival placed under the sign of American cinema.
