The Jury of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, chaired by Juliette Binoche, alongside Halle Berry, Payal Kapadia, Alba Rohrwacher, Leïla Slimani, Dieudo Hamadi, Hong Sang-soo, Carlos Reygadas, and Jeremy Strong, presented its winners from the 22 films presented in Competition this year.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival awarded the Palme d’Or to the film « A Simple Accident, » shot in secret by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who received the coveted prize from Cate Blanchett.
The jury chaired by Juliette Binoche sent a strong political signal this Saturday by awarding the Palme d’Or to Iranian dissident Jafar Panahi.
With this Palme d’Or, Jafar Panahi becomes the second Iranian filmmaker to win the award at Cannes, after Abbas Kiarostami in 1997. Last year, Cannes honored another dissident, Mohammad Rasoulof, who arrived clandestinely on the Croisette before choosing exile.
Jafar Panahi, who has already served two prison sentences in Iran, has promised to return home after the festival. A worrying decision, as his work and notoriety make him a potential target for the authorities. To this day, no one knows how the authorities will react.
« A Simple Accident » reveals the fate of « political » prisoners in Iran. The director takes us aboard a van where Vahid has imprisoned a man he recognizes as his torturer. Inside the van were a bride-to-be in her wedding dress, her husband, their wedding photographer, and another man. All former prisoners, who had suffered the violence of the woman they called « The Leg. » They recognized her, but are awaiting her confession.
Receiving the Palme d’Or, surrounded by his tearful team, Jafar Panahi urged all Iranians to forget their differences, « because what is important now is our country and our country’s freedom, » he declared.
« Let us be united, let us be together to live this moment when no one will dare tell us how we should dress, what we should say, or what we should do, » added Jafar Panahi during the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival.
« Cinema is a society; no one has the right to tell us what we should do, what we should say, » he concluded after thanking his family and children « for all the time he wasn’t with them to make his film. »
After this message, the jury decided to move on to the « Sentimental Value » awards
The grand prize was awarded to « Sentimental Value » by Norwegian director Joachim Trier.
The Norwegian director won the award with a family chronicle featuring an elderly film director who tries to reconnect with his two daughters by offering one of them a role in his next film. But she then turns down the role for a young Hollywood star, reviving painful family memories.
He decided to shoot the film in the family home, which is central to the narrative, as a witness to what has been happening there for several generations.
The jury is indifferent, stop climbing and accept two films
- Thus, two prizes were awarded by the jury to two films with different stories.
« Sirât, » a captivating journey into a hallucinatory and apocalyptic rave party in the land of Mad Max, starring Sergi Lopez.
- « Sound of Falling, » which explores a hundred years of family trauma through the lives of four women.
The Franco-Spanish director Oliver Laxe received the Jury Prize for the film Sirat, which he shared with German director Mascha Schilinski and his film « Sound of Falling. »
The Best Actor Award goes to Wagner Moura
The hero of The Secret Agent received the Best Actor Award. In his absence, the director accepted the award. « I had the privilege of having the opportunity to work with Wagner Moura. I adore him, » he explained. Brazilian actor Wagner Moura succeeds Jesse Plemons for Kinds of Kindness.
Best Actress Award for Nadia Melliti
The jury honored a newcomer, French actress Nadia Melliti, who received the Best Actress Award at the age of 23, for her very first film role in The Little Last One by her compatriot Hafsia Herzi.
« Good evening everyone, I’m feeling an emotion right now, I can’t describe it to you, but it’s truly incredible. » « Thank you, Hafsia, for your boldness, for your courage, for the trust you placed in me. » She then thanked « STAPS, » which « supported » her in this project, and her teachers, who « supported » her.
La gagnante a ensuite remercié sa mère. « Je sais que tu es en train de me regarder, j’espère que tu es très fière et que tu es contente », a déclaré Nadia Melliti, lors de la cérémonie de clôture du Festival de Cannes.
