Cannes Film Festival 2025: Julia Ducournau presents « Alpha » in competition

Four years after winning the Palme d'Or, Julia Ducournau returns to Cannes in competition.

The French director unveiled her third feature film, Alpha, on the evening of Monday, May 19, starring Golshifteh Farahani and Tahar Rahim. The film, in competition for the Palme d’Or, tells the story of a young girl confronted by the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. The filmmaker embodies a new wave of French genre cinema, which is increasingly attracting attention at the Cannes Film Festival.

Tahar Rahim presented his new film at the Cannes Film Festival and was able to count on the support of his wife, Leïla Bekhti.

On the red carpet, the cast and crew of « ALPHA, » a feature film by Julia Ducournau starring Jean-Rachid Kallouche, Finnegan Oldfield, Golshifteh Farahani, Julia Ducournau, Tahar Rahim, Mélissa Boros, Emma Mackey, and Louai El Amrousy.

Alpha, 13, is a restless teenager who lives alone with her mother. Their world comes crashing down when, one day, she comes home from school with a tattoo on her arm. The film will be released in theaters on August 20.
