The 46th Césars ceremony took place on March 12 at the Olympia, under the presidency of Roschdy Zem. The 2021 opus is very different from those of recent years, marked by the health crisis at a time when cinemas have been closed for several months and film releases canceled.
Canal +, organizer of the evening, chose to maintain the ceremony, many films having been released in theaters. The channel has chosen to celebrate the 7th art industry by giving voice to the entertainment world in crisis.
Mistress of ceremony, Marina Foïs did not mince words about the government’s attitude towards culture. For her, this ceremony should show that the entertainment world should and could continue to express itself. Politics was the guest of this evening, as were diversity, changes in the profession and equality.
“We have to say that we are aware of the difficulties that lie ahead and the privileges we have left, including the ultimate one of doing a job we love,” said Marina Foïs. “We were alone for a long time, let’s be happy to be together,” she added.
From her dressing room, the Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, had to face the invectives of angry actresses and actors.
A year after Roman Polanski’s controversial Caesar, actress Adèle Haenel’s exit with great fanfare, and a never-ending health crisis, the words were strong and full of subtlety.
Strict sanitary rules
Great guest of this evening, the health crisis won the trophy of prudence with a very strict protocol. Microphones and statuettes were disinfected and all participants had to undergo a PCR test twice. The first 48 hours before the ceremony and the second, on the morning of D-Day. It was also possible to be tested on site.
No audience, only technicians, nominees and presenters. Participants had to arrive at specific times. Only the winners took the floor.
From 9 p.m., viewers were able to follow the evening’s broadcast on Canal +.
The selections and the highlights
This year, the Académie des Césars selected only 45 feature films, compared to more than fifty in previous years. The theatrical release in 2020 was the condition. At the head of the race was the trio: “The things we say, the things we do”, by Emmanuel Mouret, “Eté 85”, by François Ozon and “Adieu les cons”, by Albert Dupontel .
Big winner of the evening, Albert Dupontel, absent from the ceremony, won 7 trophies after 11 nominations. Released only 10 days in October, the film had jumped the box office with more than 700,000 admissions.
For its part, Emmanuel Mouret’s film, given favorite with 13 nominations for “The Things We Say, The Things We Do”, left empty-handed. This is also the case for François Ozon with “Été 85”.
Sébastien Lifshitz’s film “Adolescentes” received 3 awards (best documentary film, best sound and best editing).
The evening was an opportunity to pay tribute to the big names of the big screen who died: Jean-Claude Carrère in February 2021; Jean-Pierre Bacri died in January 2021; Claude Brasseur in December 2020 and Michel Piccoli in May 2020.
The humor was at the rendezvous with Corinne Masiero who did not hesitate to remove her “Donkey Skin” then her bloody dress of “Carrie at the devil’s ball”. It is entirely naked that she presented the Caesar of the costume, a way of protesting against the current situation of the culture and supporting the intermittent ones. This service was not appreciated by all, starting with the Nice deputy Eric Ciotti or Nadine Moreno and the senator Bruno Retailleau. “Mediocrity and vulgarity … they wrote on social networks.
Awards
For the award ceremony, Marina Foïs approached many people. To welcome the candidates, only beautiful people including Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Valérie Lemercier, Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Baye or even Chiara Mastroianni and Fanny Ardant, each more elegant than the next. On the men’s side, Louis Garrel and Vincent Dedienne …
The Césars 2021 rewarded young people coming from diversity with the Césars of the best female and male hopes: Fathia Youssouf in “Mignonnes” (only 14 years old) and Jean-Pascal Zadi (also author and director) in “Simply black “. This year, the Caesars have crowned 2 young black actors, thus shattering racist stereotypes, a true symbol of change after the accusations of self and opacity last year.
The anniversary César goes to the Troupe of the Splendid which was complete without of course, the late Anemone. To celebrate their 40th birthday, the authors of “Bronzés” and “Santa Claus is a junk” had made the trip, starting with Thierry Lhermitte who, for the occasion, wore his brown costume of “Santa Claus is junk”. He was surrounded by Josiane Balasko, Michel Blanc, Marie-Anne Chazel, Christian Clavier, Gérard Jugnot and Bruno Moynot.
“We are invited, the year when there is nobody! …” launched Christian Clavier while Gérard Jugnot, very moved but disappointed with the evening (too politicized) added “For 50 years, we have been in contact .. “.
